Update April 29th

As you probably know already, we recently switched our hosting  services. As a result, this week has been focused on the transition. It was a massive operation that had to be concluded within a very short time frame. Overall :

Most of our players are seeing serious improvements in their pings. Most players are enjoying better in-game performance  especially under certain conditions, for example during large battles. While we’re happy about these improvements,  there are also reports of increased pings from some areas (like Australia, parts of Asia etc.).

In our current hosting situation, we’re the ones tasked with finding solutions for these issues. We’re currently automating the collection of data to identify players with bad routing (causing higher ping rates) so we can work on ways to improve things working with providers to fix problems. This is a very high priority for us and we’ll keep working on it proactively. Just know that we’re collecting your data as you play the game and we’ll be looking into your individual situation wherever there are connectivity issues. We believe that within a couple of weeks we’ll see improvements across the board.

We’ve already mentioned the work we’re doing on getting Darkfall to utilize multicore systems more efficiently. This will also be going in soon and we should be seeing further improvements to game performance.

Due to our hosting activities, we had to postpone our sprint presentation until next week. We’ll publish an activity report right after that. Right now we’re implementing the things we’ve been talking about in the past few weeks (and more) but until the sprint presentation there’s little to talk about. We’ve  also been working on a new patch scheduled to go in next week.

In last week’s forward feature discussion, we got a lot and important feedback from the community. Many of the things we put out there for discussion were inspired by the community to begin with. Most of the things discussed, are moving forward on  your positive feedback.   One exception is making guard towers in capital cities more powerful: Some of your negative feedback on this makes sense, and we decided to go back to the drawing board on this.

Thank you for reading

  1. ok, tasos could you tell us a little about what will next week`s patch contain?

  2. How about those crafting gains that were fixed but are still not fixed after the fix that fixed ‘m…. but not really. ye know, the increased ones that are not increased, at all.

    • I also want to know about this one, if it truly was fixed it was so insignificant it seems like a lie. I’ve personally checked 3 entire crafts before and after and theres been no change :\

  3. Tasos on April 1st:

“We were given a very good demonstration of the new sound system. It’s pretty amazing. We have a video coming up next week where we can show you some of the features.”

How long does a week in Greece last i wonder?

    • Instead of taking a sarcastic approach you should consider just reminding them in a more respectful manner. I understand your point with this Carl, I really do, but it is not going to make them want to respond to such things any faster.

      • Oh my, a voice of reason and maturity. What’s wrong with you?
I agree, I wish more of these kiddo’s would be more respectful. It’s a much better way to get results in all aspects of life.

Anyway, this update is not bad. Of course I am curious about what’s coming up in the patch but overall I get the impression that AV is hard at work.
The server switches are for the good of the game and I think a very good move (my ping went up). Just wish they gave us a few days warning. Some people will take sick days just to have a day of darkfall bliss and it would be nice if they can schedule their “illness” accordingly.

        Multicore ftw!

  4. Chris Elder says:

I’m going to be completely honest, this server change decreased my ping significantly (From 110~ to 20~). However, I was not concerned with my ping nearly as much as the lack of content in Darkfall and I think the majority of the subscribers would agree with me that we would have rather seen our Darkfall Arena first, major patches second, then server changes third. There is no sense in having a better ping if you still can’t enjoy the game due to broken mechanics such as:
    Bunny Hopping
    Fire knockups
    Self Sieging
    Bag Bugs
And I could go on and on with the list of things that need addressed, but I think you get my point.

    • Chris, Bunny Hopping, Fire Knockups and self sieging bug you? what about 4 fps in a freakin seige, not fun, i agree with the hosting changes. NEEDED to happen, Thanks AV. As far as self sieging and bag bugs……. those could change fire knockup and bunny hopping are the game…..

      • Chris Elder says:

I haven’t had 4 FPS in a siege since EU-1 :P I upgraded to an Alienware after transferring and haven’t had any FPS problems,

I just want to see some more stuff fixed and polished before worrying about statistical problems like where they need to place the server, when they already placed it somewhere.

    • Fire knockups are fine just use your sword and shield works for me.

    • I have a hard time believing, even as small as AV is, that changing hosts would have any significant effect on the time frame for DF: Arena. It’s only logical to do this before they relaunch and market the game since they want players who join after Arena to have optimal performance on their respective continents’ servers. I feel for the Aussies though. In the end they’re getting screwed. Hopefully AV can get that taken care of.

    • Sentius Nox says:

bag bugs not a big deal and should be the last thing addressed its just annoying is all. knockups should not be gotten ride of but should be turnd down a little I mean being able to land a fireball and knock someone over a city wall with 30feet to spare is just rediculus max knock up should be a little bit less then a surging launch no more. self seiging should just be taken out of the game its a chicken shit move and just should be dealt with. as for bunny hoping….DO NOT change it in anyway I beg you its part of the game and it takes skill to learn how anyway, especially in water. realy you need to start working on game content and stop worrying about stupid shit like a new lighting system that no one is going turn on because it will drop fps.

  5. Styrr Lol says:

    Fuck the australians, anyway !

  6. James Dooney says:

Thanks for making the game unplayable for oceanic players (Y)

  7. Me and ~90% of our 22 active player guild have cancelled due to unplayable ping (200msec->280). Thanks for fucking us over.

  8. The server change did nothing for me, and while I can understand the reasons they changed it all I can focus on is how AV focuses on the least important things about the game first. Patients is a thing all gamers learn, but now days all companies are ridiclous. I’d hoped an independant company wouldn’t follow the trends of public cooperations that kill the gaming industry.

  9. Lee Joyner says:

The server changed quadrupled my ping, unfortunately, so now I’m not viable with knives for pvp. I’m also getting the paperdoll bug, where I can’t equip or switch weapons.

Tasos, any update on the patch for this week?

  10. Sentius Nox says:

I would just like to say that sence u changed the servers I’ve had a normal ping of 300-480 and while fighting a ghost my hitbox was 30ft away half the time and I barly ever landed a hit when he was right in front of me. this is unexceptable and I would really hate to have to stop playing this game just because of something so damn stupid. Not to mention when someone comes into my area now instead of just a simple lagg I get dced from the added ping.
